So I am looking at a viola right now that is being privately sold. The label reads Erich Werner, Geigenbaughmeister, Buebenreuth, made in western germany. It was made in 1982 and has the signature of (to the best of what i can tell) Eui (possibly eri or evi) d. Wavy ( i think) on the label, and underneath the label theres a strip of paper that says Mary Monroe (the person it was made for i guess). above the label, towards the middle of the instrument, there is, from what i know, a serial code of 83641. I am very knowledgeable in the field of instruments but this one stumps me. any information? Erich Werner is engraved into the back of the instrument also. The varnish is amber brown and the wood is medium grain spruce top plate, medium flame and grain 2 piece maple back plate. Also, there is a Alfons Reidl bow that comes with it, so if anything is known about any of these, please let me know! thanks http://s257.photobucket.com/albums/hh225/gopaw12/

Don't know anything about it, but looks very nice in the pics -- possibly comparable to a Stringworks MT2 or KB (or possibly even a bit better or quite possibly worse OTOH) based on the pics alone, but pics (particularly given the limitations presented there) can't remotely tell the full story, so ...

If you can get it w/ a reasonable trial period (at least 7 days and long enough to have your teacher check it out) w/ full refund, if not completely happy, then it's probably worth giving it a try. Well, I'm assuming the price isn't too high of course -- you didn't mention what's the asking price.

Hope that helps some...

Also, what size viola is that? That could possibly factor into the equation, if you're looking for something out of the ordinary in size, etc. 16" or so would be pretty standard for a full size viola although a lot of amateurs seem to go for smaller (for comfort and easier playability).
