Laura's losing her cello teacher in about a month and we're starting to look around. The replacement at her school is very nice guy and all, but too shy to be effective for a student Laura's age. She used him last summer while her teacher was away. He'll be great with the little ones. (IMHO of course) We'll be looking at a great program at Queens College. The cello teacher has her BM and MM from julliard, is strict in a good way (according to her piano teacher who recommended this teacher) and they have a consevetory prep class as well as orchestra and chamber groups. A muscianship class is also a must. Registration and open house is tomorrow which we can't make, but we're trying to set up an appt. for a tour/intervies/ audition. Wish us luck. (please) |

That's a bummer. I got the impression you really liked Laura's teacher, so I'm sorry to hear the news. Still, these things do happen from time to time, and they can be great opportunities. You sound like you know what sort of teacher you're looking for, so I'm sure you'll find the right fit. (Just occured to me that you and Laura have come a long way from the days of the violinist cello instructor!) Will you need to switch piano teachers as well if you change programs? Best of luck to both of you. We're missing an open house tomorrow too -- for high school (H. enters 8th grade next year) because of practice for her evaluation next Tuesday. The paint is still a bit wet on her main piece -- Intro and Rondo Capriccioso -- and needs some woodshedding.

Cellopop that's too bad you're losing a good teacher. But the good news is you both know what you want/need in a cello teacher/program so this should be a very positive experience. Goodluck! StringDad, we'll be anxious to hear how the evaluation goes next week. |

Aww...didn't she have the same teacher for several years already? It seemed like Laura was doing really well with him. I remember seeing a picture of him on this forum playing the cello on this colorful rug. And he was wearing crocs. I think. Haha...is it the same guy? I can kind of relate, 'cause I'm losing my teacher as well too. I learned so much from her in such a short amount of time that I don't really want a new teacher! I think, besides us non-major cellists @ school, she teaches little kids privately, but for some reason, her teaching style and way of explaining things really worked for me. Haha...maybe that tells you something about me XP If I get a teacher half as good next semester, I'll be happy (...hmm...but still not as happy ). We'll see though... But best of luck to you guys with the interview/audition! Sounds like a really great program... wish I had an opportunity to do something like that! Kerjun

Yea, its a bummer SD. Chris is a great teacher and player. We don't have to give up the piano teacher. She also teaches at Queens College on different days. We may eventually move her piano lessons there for convenience sake but it really isn't necessary. If this works out, she gets to have cello lessons on Saturday and Cellomom as you all affectionately call her, can take her. I'm kind of burning out, to be honest. Ill keep you all posted. |

Cellopop...I can understand. I tell people I am a professional 'waiter' as in...I take my kids to their respective music lessons or sport lessons...and then I wait for them to be done. I have a bag in which I carry all pertinent reading material and other misc. items needed by the parent who...waits. I cannot wait for the day I can have internet access via satellite so I can be surfing the web while sitting at softball practice. Is that technology so much to ask for?! If Bill Gates was the one waiting for his kids all the time...it would have been a done deal long ago. |

Cellopop/Curtis - My cello teacher recommended Marcy Rosen and Alex Kougell but said she could recommend others if she knew more about Laura's playing ability. If you would like a direct contact with my teacher, please email me at cellojoan@comcast.net. |

Joan, mighty generous of you to take interest. Thank you. Laura is almost through with level Suzuki level 6. She has completed the Dotzauer etudes and has a few Popper High School etudes and Duport under her belt. As far as the NYS School Music Assc. score goes, she scored 100% on level 5. She also has some experience with a 3 piece chamber group and has played in the Long Island String Festival and the All County festival, where they take the most advanced from each school in Nassau County. The teacher at Queens College has a really extensive resume and we are trying to hook up an audition, but I'm certainly willing to look into a few more teachers. This is NY and it shouldn't be TOO difficult, its just that we would like to keep moving for continuity. Thanks again. |

See: Clara Yang, Cello coordinator. You can breeze through the rest of the site too, if interested. Looks promising and only a 15-20 minute ride AND on Saturdays! |

Wow Curtis, Laura has really gobbled up the music hasn't she? I bet you are extremely proud of her. Someone told me once that if you can play Popper, then you know how to play the cello. ;) Good luck in finding a new instructor. At least you get to make a decision between several possibilities. I am the only teacher within a 100 miles. And I only teach for that reason. We need more cellists! Michelle I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not sure.

Laura has an interview/audition on Sat. Things are getting rosier everyday. I forwarded her current teacher the info. He said these a very well respected group of teachers in the NY area. I'm pleased with the news. |

OK. Laura had her first lesson with her new teacher. She is amazing and what we all believe to be a perfect match. She can break down a difficult passage to the finest detail and nuance to produce instant results. She was very impressed with the way Laura can listen and execute her request and be such a fast learner. Success!! Siiiiiigh........ |

Unfortunately, her new teacher is in Korea for the entire monthe of July so not much to report other than she has started her on the Bach Cello suites, beginning that "right to passage" sort of speak. We bought the Bahrenreiter edition. Laura pretty much has the Prelude accomplished already. on atother note, the replacement of her former teacher has been let go by the director of the musice school. Apparantly we were not the only unhappy campers. I kind of feel a little guilty but the guy was just boring. So now, the director would like Laura to take a free lesson with a perspective teacher, lady, 6 ears Julliard, yadda yadda yadda, as a favor just to get a teenagers perspective. We're really happy with the current lady at Queens College and I don't want to mess that up (she teaches on Saturdays and Cellomom gets to bring her, Cello gets a break) but we agreed to help her out. She really wants to get it right this time and since Laura still takes piano there, why not? So that's the news, to be continued. |

That is great about the Bach. We were given Bach to mitigate the harmful enoui caused by the plethora of inane etudes. Bach did everything, if you can pay his music you can play anything. |
