my duet partner has a Klaus Mueller Prelude Cello that someone had lent her and wanted to sell to her, so when I went over to practice with her this afternoon we had a look at it; she had not had a chance to check it out as she had just gotten it last night anyways........it took us a few minutes to tune it, and then it did not seem to want to stay in tune - but we went ahead and played it a bit anyways - it was extremely quiet and thin/nasally sounding, the C and G strings especially sounded really dead, the bridge also seemed to be warped at the top and leaning a bit towards the fingerboard...it sounded alot worse than the no name plywood rental that she is using now - this was my first experience playing and hearing a low end instrument and it really made me think how lucky I was to have a decent sounding cello....I think that playing on something like that Prelude would have caused me to give up long ago we didnt really spend more than 10 minutes fussing with it, as we both concurred that it didnt sound very good at all - also the seller wanted $800 for it, so we googled it and discovered that it sells online in the $550 range to be fair, this is a used cello and I have no idea how it was setup, what kind of strings it has, how old they are, etc etc, and I am certainly no expert at evaluating stringed instruments... but my initial impression is that it has very poor sound quality "It's only one note at a time, how hard can it be?"
