Todd,
I had been looking for a new professional quality violin for my son for
some time. I wanted it to be a special gift from me that he would keep
for a lifetime. The search wasn't going so well. So before making any
other decisions, I decided to contact your team at Stringworks to see
what you may have available. I had purchased from Stringworks before. I
was hoping you might have a Man Claudiu violin available because my son
really needed a better violin right away. The David Frederick violin was
mentioned. I am so very glad that you sent it out to me. Keep in mind
that just the week before we had four violins to try from other sources
but we never quite found one that we wanted. When the David Frederick
arrived my son and I were very excited to give it a try. My son opened
the case. He said "It's beautiful". When he first tuned the Dave
Frederick violin a big smile came over his face. He played some scales
and a piece with a lot of double and triple stops in it. He said "I want
this violin. I love it." He then played for almost two hours straight;
Smiling, pausing and and saying "listen to this", "that's really good",
"this is really the one", "I like the tone".

I am very thankful to you and your team at Stringworks for making me
aware of this violin model. My son's instructors are also very impressed
and grateful too! :-) The David Frederick Violin is exceptionally
crafted, has a absolutely wonderful sound and I can only imagine the
improvement that is coming as it opens up.

Thanks for the notes, Eric!

This violin lasted all of probably 3 days in our possession - including waiting for Edmund to try it out, let's call it a week.

We're expecting another one at the end of this month from David, and the end of next month one from Matteo Mazzotti.

The good news to us cellists is this: I convinced David to make a cello for us too!!

Eric,

Thank you for the wonderful comments! I am very happy your son is enjoying the violin. I will be in contact very soon regarding the free check ups and adjustments. For those who may be curious I have attached a photo of the violin.

Do you work at Stringworks, or is this another maker's line SW is carrying? What do violins run? Thanks for posting. It's a gorgeous violin!

Myles,

We will be selling David's instruments as well as several other contemporary violin and bow makers starting this year. It's an exciting opportunity for us, the makers (we hope), and our customers.

Look here for more information about what will be named as 'StringWorks: The Collection", with a separate website, mailing list, etc.

Admins,

Although I am far from being a marketing expert, I really feel you guys are heading in a right direction. Personally, I think there is a certain sense of "pride of ownership" involved when a makers name is involved. As good as the Stringworks instruments are, there seems to be something missing by just calling an instrument a Stringworks, Eastman, etc etc.
Even if the instrument would say "from the shop of........(name)made exclusively for Stringworks."
Anyway, this seems to be an exciting new venture and I wish you and the makers all the best.

So who are some of these makers? :-)

Kerjun - you've been away too long.

I will post more information here soon, with full details of the plan for 'StringWorks: The Collection'.

I plan to have a number of contemporary violin and bow makers, and to date we have David Frederick and soon will have our first instruments from Cremonese maker Matteo Mazzotti as well. I have several other makers in mind, but have not yet signed on the dotted line, as it were.

That's all for now - stay tuned!

Great to hear.

I don't know about the "pride" thing, but I do think it probably helps some for a musician's confidence (both w/ SW's ability to provide quality instruments and the instrument itself). Well, it certainly gives me more confidence to consider a SW instrument (whether for myself or for my kids) to know that we would not be too limited as upgrades are considered in the future.

And thanks much, Eric, for sharing your experience w/ this new violin made by David Federick.

Oh.........I don't know, Man. I seem to detect a note of pride when you mention your vintage Master Art Juzek instrument. I could be mistaken, but that's the way it sounds to me.
When I kerplunk down some hard earned on an instrument I like, I'm proud of it.

Hehheh. Curtis, I think the "pride" for me is probably just for the bargains I've gotten so far off eBay -- heck, I even mention the lightly used SW Maestro cello I bought from time to time. I could definitely use the "confidence" though giving my poor, beginner's technique.

Cellopop,

Have you ever seen the British comedy "Keeping up Appearances"? It has a lady, Hyacinth, who is always trying to impress the neighbors. She's always throwing tea parties with her "Royal Dulton with the hand painted periwinkles".

Everytime I hear Man say something like "my pre-WWII Vintage Juzek Master Art"..... I get the same impression.

One lump or 2???

I've caught brief glimpses of that show, Myles.

I have trouble keeping up with British comedy.

Cellomom and Laura love it. They think its hysterical.

Me?? I'm kind of like.......... "I dont get it"

I must be what they call a rough crowd.

Carolyn,

The current prices for violins are $7500-$8000, depending on the instrument. We have one more coming soon, hopefully in about a week's time, and someone is already on the list to receive it for trial, but you never know...

Hehheh...

Myles,

If my being descriptive in mentioning an instrument I own (when discussing instruments) seems a bit much, my apologies for that. I just have a tendency to be overly descriptive/thorough in the way I write. As you may note, I tend to get verbose w/ everything, not just when I mention a violin or such. I guess I might be borderline OCD in that sense. I suppose I could always just say "my violin" and only mention what it is when somebody asks.

Oh no Man, please don't change your ways! I love the analogy that Myles used and I will forever think fondly of you when you talk about your pre-WWII Master Art Juzek.

Hyacinth takes great pride in her hand painted Royal Doulton china, as my sister also does in her original art works she has collected. And so should you in your violin.

I can only take pride in the fact that I have 'room for a pony' at my country house.

David Federick,

I can't thank you enough for making this violin. My son really enjoys playing it very much. It is a joy to watch him discover what a excellent violin can do. He will absolutely be amazed as it opens up!

Ker, Did you know that a raw piece of high quality aged tonewood for the back of a cello can run about $1000.00?

It costs money to get the materials necessary to make fine instruments. There is a big business in aged lumber.

On another note, if Man has a fine aged instrument he has every reason to be proud of it. If you have developed a special relationship with your instrument then it is something quite wonderful regardless of what you paid for it.

I had a violin for many years that I got at a flea market for $400.00. It was a nice old instrument with a lion head instead of a scroll. I enjoyed playing it for many years.

It's been 10 mo. since I purchased the David Frederick violin for my son, Peter. The violin is opening up beautifully! The improvement is remarkable and rapid. The E and A string are exceptional with the D sounding great, and G coming along fine. Amazing. We are very very happy with this fine instrument. More in a few months...

The David Frederick violin has improved in sound quality in a dramitic way. Both Peter and I find it exceptional to our ears. Peter recently played a little concert for a small group of musicians. They were impressed with the rich full deep lows. With a fresh set of Evah Pirazzi strings, it sounds excellent!
