Violists know that their instrument often has unique
characteristics and very individualistic sound - our Giuseppe Francesco violas are
available in a wide array of designs and with any combination of measurements as they are
handmade for us in Richmond, Virginia one at a time. We choose unique models that feature
rich and deep overtones, with powerful low registers. Our original design (shown below)
possess a very full and broad timbre due to its relatively wide bouts. This allows a
slightly shorter body instrument to have the tone and projection of a much longer body
viola. We feature Stradivari, DaSalo, and Milanese inspired models as well as our own
design, and can take your very own commission of an viola if you have particular needs in
mind. Check our website for the Giuseppe Francesco violas we currently have available, or
contact us to have us make one just for you!

| This example of our broad-pattern viola
is constructed of fine American maple and Engelman spruce The relatively short body length
of 16" loses none of the tone qualities of 16 3/4" and 17" violas due to
the extra breadth in the upper and lower bouts. This viola is the perfect instrument
for a violist looking for a 17" viola sound in a much more accomodating
package. The varnish is antiqued to replicate that of a mid-19th century Mantuan
viola. The model is also loosely based on instruments of the Mantuan and Brescian school,
with slightly roped edges, short corners, and a narrow scroll. The tone is very deep,
broad and rich with a bass register similar to that of a cello. $3,250.00 |
